I have been back from my trip to spain for four days, and was getting
erratic drive slippage, I checked my transmission fluid, it was not
reading on the stick! I had a full service before i left, and checked it
at regular intervals, no problems, i have topped it back to normal level
and no more problems. my question is where has it all gone? oh by the way
no visible leaks or puddles.

Have you checked for signs of fluid loss at the back of the gearbox? It may have leaked from there and was blown away when you where driving.

I steamed cleaned it when got back, that could be a possibility

leaky ATF cooler leaks into main cooling rad... have you checked the coolant??
