    [QUOTE=andy]Renew the starter contacts.[QUOTE]

I'll go along with the above, if it was glow plugs etc then it would be turning over but not firing. You say theres just a click, check earths but suspect its the starter motor.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

hope it's not the starter motor - with my luck it'll not come out etc etc

I will check the earths asap.

Andy thanks - I notice that's for the 3 litre model - does anyone know if the 2.4 is the same?

if it clicks, its definately leading to the starter motor and contacts. Same scenario as myself.

Would it be the Solinoid?? When you say a click, you mean a click from the starter motor?

Sometimes, the starter dog, that shoots up the shaft to engage with the flywheel doesn't engage properly. Before you start it cold next time, give the starter motor a good tap with a wooden hammer handle or the like and see what happens?

right - here we go again - after my last post - no trouble at all with the Surf - until today!

just would not start - opened bonnet - heavy click coming from passenger side area.

left alone for 5 mins, tried hitting starter motor - no effect.

moved gear lever back and forth - and she started!!!

looked at driver side battery - and my indicator window is no longer green - it's black.

now what do i do, new battery or starter bits? I'm on hols in a weeks time so my time is VERY limited as to what to do with the Surf. (as is money).

going to see if i can get a battery later today.

              Driving me crazy now.......

                Dave,
If you’re getting a loud click from the passenger side it sounds very much like your starter, job takes about an hour and a half following Fieldys’ excellent instructions. If you’re on a tight budget just buy the contacts and clean the plunger up with a bit of wire wool.

battery is almost dead - so new battery tonight - called Roughtrax who said "oh no we don't do parts for the starter on 2.4's - you need to buy a new starter motor"

will let you know outcome of the new battery - and if it don't start in the mornings - i'll jiggle wires first as £160 to possibly cure is a little bit on the steep side.
                    Blinking thing ay

only good thing is how everyone pulls together to solve a prob - nice one guys

                      Dave,
All the bits you need to fix the starter will cost you £35 form you local Toyota dealer or about £18 if you re-use the plunger. My local dealer had the bits on the shelf aparently it's a common problem with this type of starter and Toyota use it in other vehicles too.

well - thanks for that info about the parts - it could come in very handy next week.

time is my enemy as I'm taking my mum and family away in the Surf for a week to sunny Bournemouth area (and getting 4 new tires too from Micheldever) so it's also an expensive week ahead for me.

the other thing you could try is the relay they will click if there sticking and a bit cheaper to replace

Get the battery swapped over first. A diesel engine takes more power to turn over as the enginge works on the glow plugs to provide inital heating of the fuel [provides vapours] and then compression to provide combustion as opposed to a spark to set of the combustion process.

                            If it is the Starter
Look on the various threads mentioned, sticky-thread, fieldsy and the one I posted and you will see the part-no's required and pricing as at the time purchased direct from Toyota.

Just give the parts counter you model no of the VIN Plate
