3rd Gen on 15" Wheels?

Now I always thought that 15" wheels would not fit on a 3rd Gen Surf coz of interferance with the calipers (altough some US 3rd Gen 4 Runners had 15" rims w different brakes).
I sometimes spot another 3rd Gen (a '96 SSR-X) on my way home, and often thought his tyres looked very narrow. Recently we were stopped in traffic close enough for me to spot his rims, despite having a standard 3rd Gen spare, its running on the standard 2nd Gen alloys, which AFAIK are all 15" rims.

Hmm... wonder how he managed that ?

I know someone who clearanced the corners of his calipers with a grinder to get a set of wheels to clear.

I guess you can grind a little off, without it hurting, depends how far you need (or have the balls) to go!!!

Some of the early 3rd gen Surfs had a smaller diameter disc fitted on the front,so that might be the reason that the 15" wheels fitted in this case.
