any update - I got idenitcal letter today

Bushwacker - did you ever manage to qualify for the 27.1 p litre duty

I got san identical letter today in reply to my EX103 submission, saying bascially with veg oil you have to pay 47.1 p per litre

Also got another note with the letter saying:

"Following legal advice we have concluded that in order to qualify as a biodiesel and therefore attract lower ate of duty, vegetable oil (whether used or unused) must be processed by some method which converts the vegetable oil into a fuel suitable for use in a diesel engine - the only method we are currently aware of is the transesterification process. Our decision is based on research into the reason for the introduction of the reduced duty rate for biodiesel, which was to provide for the additional cost in producing the fuel against the cost of producing ordinary diesel"

Looks like C&E are closing the lower duty rate on veg oil...... is there a solution?, not keyed up on "transesterificaiton" sounds painfull!!

Sorry mate I haven't sent it back yet, 'cos I'm working from home now and I've only done 25 miles in the past four weeks in the truck, and thats only just over a gallon of diesel.

Maybe I'm being thick here, but surely SVO is ALREADY a "fuel suitable for use in a diesel engine, pace the many diesels already running on SVO, with or without mixing with dino-diesel?

Just sounds like C&E are trying to rake in every penny in duty they can manage, and to hell with the greener alternatives.

                Duty

It would appear that if two people send in the same forms, chances are that they will both be charged different rates., depending on who reads the form. It would appear to me that if you say you are adding vegetable oil to diesel, already in the tank you are producing Bio Diesel, but if mixing outside tank, you are making alternative fuel, which attracts higher rate.. Seems stupid to me, when they don't even have a form for private motorists. Although happy to help anyone filling in there forms, it would appear that although i pay 27.1p, it may not apply to new applicant, even though they put same as i did.
On a good note, JEM who did my Cam belt and changed all belts plus oils etc, where vey good. Loan car etc and was pleased that bill was less than i worked out in my head.
Did London to Bergen op Zoom, there and back a couple of days ago and averaged 27 MPG. Over the moon, although can't see how Cam belt change would make that difference, as car was running good before.

Hia All, in reply to Phillips offer, may i say thank you to him on the site. After chatting to him and taking his advise on filing in the forms. I am now paying duty at 27 p/ ltr. Any considering doing the veg oil trip, my advise is to do it now. Take in all the info you can and send it off to HMCE. They wanted proof of me that the veg oil was safe to use ( i.e sulphur content ect ). So i printed of forum letters and hilighted the appropriete areas. They seemed happy with that ,and sent me the grant to carry on. Thank you once again Phillip. HAPPY VEDGING

perhaps they adjusted the timing slightly... or the old belt may have been a little loose causing the timing to be a notch out?
