Can anyone tell me what the gear shift is ???

Would i be right in saying
    (P) = park
    (D) = drive normal road use
    (N) = nutrel
    (2) = for starting off when pulling heavy loads????????
    (L) = HAVENT GOT A CLUE???????????

    ALSO
Someone said i should select i diffrent gear when going up steep hills and not normal drive (D)
Would it be (L) by any chance
can anyone shed any light on my questions please
    Thanks

    (L) is commonly used when offroading in conjunction with Low ratio for controlled hill climbs and descents.

I do not know, but would imagine it could be useful for towing also.

Going up hills can be left in Drive, but if you need the gear change to be longer then press in the O/D button [changes at higher revs]

        P - Park
        R - Reverse
        N - Neutral
        2 - 2nd gear
        L - 1st Gear

        2nd shift
        H - High
        L - Low

        Example...
        Normal conditions would be

        1st lever in D
        2nd lever in H

        Towing from start [slippy conditions]
possibly use 2 or L, more torque at low down, then slip back into D for drive

        off-roading [depending on ground conditions]
        H/D
        H/2
        H/L

        L/D
        L/2
L/L- in the deep stuff basically

On 1st/2nd Gens do not use 4wd combinations on tarmac. There is no centre diff like on the 3rds so you will end up winding-up the transmission/axles

Your can leave the selector in D all the time if you like (well all the time you want to go forward!!).
2 will hold 2nd gear (although it will start in 1st if you are stationary and then shift to 2nd). This is useful for descending a steep hill and giving your brakes a rest - also usually will stop the engine labouring up steep hills and the gearbox not quite knowing what gear to be in when going up steep hills (although there is so much torque in the Surf engine this is a little superfluous)
          L - like 2 but more so
R - you missed this one - backwards!! (not to be used when going forwards)
The Surf gearbox is a four speeder. D gives you access to all four as the road conditions and your right foot decree.
At about 54mph, the gearbox will lock to the engine - you will notice a significant drop in revs - this saves losses in the torque converter and is quieter and more fuel efficient.
If you press the O/D button, then the gearbox will be limited to ratios 1 2 & 3 only - and neither will you get the gearbox lock-up. Some people say this gives better mpg around town
The ECT button will increase the speed at which up-changes take place - giving the impression of greater accelleration - in fact it makes very little difference except to your wallet - again due to the massive torque of these engines.
