i have just got my first surf, a 1994, 3.0ltr ssrx ltd (lucky boy) any way when manoevering slowly backwards or forwards or even when just getting in or out of the car there is a creaking noise coming from the front, not very loud but i want to cure it. At first i thought it was just the tyres, we have had some rather hot and sticky weather here lately, but it is not. Underneath there are 2 large rubber 'bungs' i think they must be 'axle stop' rubbers? depending on the angle of the car a smallish gap opens up between the 'axle stop' and the axle. should there be grease in this gap? It is bone dry at the moment. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you're refering to the bump stops, they stop the suspention banging against the chassis.
the creaking noises may be coming from some rubber bushes somewhere, and maybe cured with some WD 40 or similar.
