    Looking to fit an Alarm.
Loads of different makes around here, but the company I like uses 'Cobra' systems.
The Cobra system I was thinking about was a 7928 or 8186 both with option of Hyperfrequency.
    Its Thatcham Cat 1.

    Any thoughts on Cobra etc??

One of the companies near me use 'Toad of Toad hall' alarms, but I wouldn't have them put washer fluid in for me!!
Don't actually need the alarm for insurance............I just thought it may be useful as a theft deterent and ya get remote central locking and other stuff thrown in

I had this one fitted cos insurance made me, with a couple of optional extras cost £450. It is a good system and protects all the bits, A bar, spare etc. Can be a pain getting used to it mind.

Which model have u got? Ive been quoted £299 for the 7928 with Ultrasonic interior ,but the option of hyperfrequency seems better.
The 8186/8 just has a slightly higher rated immobiliser.
What was a pain to get used to?

Sorry but I've just had a quote from Adrian Flux, and I'm a pre-existing client. I have been asked for a minimum of a Thatcham Cat.2 for my new Surf.

I had a Cobra 7928 fitted 4 weeks ago. I bought it from a company called InCarDiscount. Installed with certificate for £280. Meets the insurance requirements with Privilege.

Had a cat 1 fitted as required by Norwich Union but when I changed to Liv/Vic (underwritten by A . Flux ) they weren,t interested .
Of course insurers move the goalposts all the time . At one stage they wouldn,t take any new surf owners as clients so hopefully asking for an alarm means they,re taking new custom .

I let my fingers do the walking and found everywhere local at the same prices. thatcham immob = £130 and Thatcham alarm £300.
I had a bit of a problem with the cenral locking when i got it so it seemed like a pretty good deal to get the alarm (Laserline) as they put in all new motors. it seems pretty good but the passive arming just winds me up - if you don't start the car within about 30secs of getting in you have to arse about with a little plastic key setting the alarm off and all sorts. probably.

Got a gen 3 ssr x 3litre . Run the battery's flat by leaving an interior light on.
Recovered the battery's and recharged them both, now showing 13.10 volts. Put them back on the car. everything works except the immobiliser and cant start the car. its a Thatcham cat 1 laser line . alarm works, central locking works, everything except the immobiliser, dash light are not coming on except door open and seatbelt lights. When I do try the key the clock goes out.
Any suggestion's would be very grateful to say the least!

Sounds like the batteries are shot. Have you tried jump starting it? If one battery out the two is fubar it will drag the other down quickly

I have a Viper two way pager remote start alarm.

It cost about £300 a few years ago, fitted it myself, highly recommended.

Thanks for the replys . Couldn't get any technicians to remove and replace the immobiliser , seem to be all on holidays or snowed under with work so striped out the ruddy thing myself, took about one and a half hours , car and alarm etc runs fine so at least I'm back on the road . Gonna book to have a new one fitted tomorrow. Thanks again.
