I have just bought one of these and would like to add a gps receiver to find my way around, so can anybody recommend a good but cheap add on for use in the surf and also on foot.

Also will need some software, seem to remember that Memory map has been recommended before, I have access to Microsoft Autoroute 2005 so will I be able to use that with gps.

I use tomtom, with a bluetooth gps reciever. That works well and also works with blooth handsfree in car, my pda is xda so has the phone built in as well. As far as memory map is concerned it is very good but remember it is a map, it has no route planning or direction giving abilities. If you go for tomtom beware that it replace the gps port driver with its own and will not allow anything else access to it, even after a soft reboot. Get a prog called GPSGATE which gets over that and you will be in business with memory map as well.

Not sure why but mine will still pick up the gps signal even if the reciever is in my pocket, I thought they had to have a clear view of the sky.

but not sure they even do those anymore. It does mean its self-contained but if I did it again I would just go for an external antenna that you can mount on your dash so its got a better view of the sky.

I now use TomTom for on-road nav.

Use on foot may be fairly limited as GPS recievers seem to suck a fair bit of battery power (well mine does anyway). And yes I think Autoroute will work with your GPS but not sure what features/direction-giving abilities it has.

and I still cant find anything thats guaranteed to work with my Sony Clie TH55 !!!
anyone know of anything BT or otherwise? I think ViaMichelin might work on bacle but very old now, cant find out if navman 4470 et al will work for sure.

I'm using an Ipaq 3630 (Oldie but goody) with Tom Tom 3. Plus UK post codes (Has been removed from original site due to copyright infringement -BT) and speed camera software. All interface well with TT3. Biggest problem I had was finding a suitable reciever....... originally purchased a navman sleeve with CF card slot but this tookages to lock on to satalites and would not hold signal, (System locked out after 3 mins). I have a garmin etrex which I use for simple marine navigation (Gives me co-ordinates in an emergency and points me back to launch site). I contacted a guy selling PDA bits on ebay and he has knocked up a connecting/power lead for the garmin to ipaq. coupled with a standard expansion sleeve for the memory card I now have a sturdy reliable system which never fails.
I would recomend that an external reciever is used rather than a GPS sleeve, They seem to lock into and hold the signals far better.
P.S Does anyone know of any cheap/free chart plotting software suitable for a PDA?
