Drilling drum brakes

I put the SDV in for new brakes all round and replacement rear springs yesterday at a 4x4 specialist. When we picked the truck up the mechanic who did the work gave us a bit of a talking to about the brakes as half of Salisbury was still in the rear drums He said we should not use the truck in deep water in those conditions unless we drilled the drums and then we should clean them out when we get home afterwards.

I've done a search on the forum as vaguely remember reading this somewhere but I can't find a thread. Has anyone drilled their drums? and is there a particular way they should be done? Won't they also get filled with regular road dirt if I've drilled them out as well? I would have thought they were sealed for a reason.

I know the ideal solution is to convert to discs but I have read the thread on this one and it looks prohibitively expensive... right?

What rear brakes? Do surfs have them?

Theres nowt wrong with Salisbury mud in yer drums, just makes locking up the fronts more fun!

I wouldn't drill the drums, that'll let more crap in. You cant do much about it, all cars are the same, Early Series Land Rovers have drums all round!! So the guy is saying no 4x4 should ever go deeper than the bottem of the drum? Tell him to think about things before giving advise!!

If the brakes feel rubbish after wheelin' strip them and clean them, if not, carry on happily.



Or build a rear disk conversion, I am.
