  • it will be mine...oh yes it will be mine...but

Hi all, I will have a Hilux, it is imminent. But there are a few things I need to know so I’m sure I’m making the right choice.
    Such as,
    1. I’m inclined to go for the model with ABS, is it really worth it?

    2. Where is the spare wheel if it’s not rear mounted? I’m thinking rear mounted would be better (keeps it out of the boot space + looks more 4x4 with it on the back 

    3. I’m also thinking 2.4TD not the 3.0 because I think it may be cheaper to insure and cheaper to run. I’d like the 3.0 does it cost loads more to run?

    4. I’m planning on doing the 3in body lift if it doesn’t already have it done. Is this a particularly good or bad idea…also the 32mm spacer plates for the wheels to give it more stability and a beefier look. Any thoughts on the mods I have planned if you seasoned Hilux veterans could point me in the right direction it would be most helpful.
I have other mods planned but I think ill be ok with these…
7in tft screens in the rear headrests for the PS2, laptop under seat with touch screen on dash for the tunes…. It’s going to be unreal.
    Cheers for your help.

    Hi Jay,

Firstly if you are looking at getting an ABS equiped truck then you are looking for a 3.0 Litre - which is the preferable option if you can do it, they are both about the same on running costs, but guess which has more grunt

If the spare is not rear mounted it's underneath, which makes a flat tyre when offroading fun - NOT.

The wheel spacers do make it look a bit wider, but go for the machined steel, not the alloy ones. Remember that adding a lift kit will move your centre of gravity up, and therefore affect the handling I would advise that you also look into getting some stronger rear springs to cure the soggy surf bum.

If it's newly into the country you should also consider changing all the tyres, or you could be a trifle busy in the wet

        That I don't know Jay,

if you want ABS you will have to look at a 96 onwards Surf (3rd gen onwards), as far as I am aware the 2nd Gen doesn't have ABS, although mine has never bitten me in anger on the tarmac

To give you an idea of fuel comsuption hippo has just averaged 26 mpg on 198 1/2 litres of fuel, that includes an 80km offroad run and my daily commute which involves the M25

ABS is probably incompatible with Landy type 4WD where the front and rear axles are locked together in the transmission. It might produce unpredictable and possibly dangerous results. Hence ABS is only available with 3rd Gen onwards with the centre diff arrangement as far as I know.

I see the first advert is a "freah cars" surf would have a look at the other forum posts regarding them.

If you are looking at a 2.4 ask if the head has been done, and make sure the work and the head are both guaranteed. The head must be new, not reconditioned, and of the new design - you can do a search here for details.

I seriously would suggest you look at a 3.0 litre.

To be honest you will be looking around the £8000 mark for a Gen 3 with ABS (a decent one that is).

not that much differance in insurance and im getting nearly 28mpg in mine not bad for a 2 ton growling beast, i went for the 3rd gen as i had read about the poss head prob on 2.4 but if head has been done shouldnt be a prob anyway , Oh and pearl grey ones are so much faster ,the surf is a great motor and it always gives me a grin when im driving her

Im a member of a few sites and forums, for my bikes and other stuff…but this one is by far the best and most helpful and welcoming. Thanx you lot.
I now know to check about the head, although I’ve got a ‘Mikey the super mechanic’ best mate who would do the head for coffee and biscuits, obviously id have to buy a head and gaskets.
Oh and unless a really nice 2.4 comes up in my price range ill be looking out for the 3.0. But a black 3litre in mint condition for 25p is hard to come by and I’m really not keen on the maroon ones.
About £3000 is my limit but from what I’ve seen this is not impossible (as long as i dont go to a car dealer that wants 5 grand).
This isn’t just a vehicle I want….ive gotta get one soon because the missis is sick of me talking in my sleep about it

just to stir it up a bit more.. better 3k worth of 2.4 than 3k worth of 3ltr... cos a 3k 3 ltr MUST have something wrong with it!! (if it hasnt, can i have it, please.)
                              it's in me shed, mate.
