legal tints and TV

Afternoon,

now that my Surf is running again I fancied tinting the front windows to match the rears - I know you can't tint the windscreen but is it legal to have tints on the driver/passenger windows? I've got a load of limo-black tint film left over...

Also, are there any rules about in-car TVs? I sold the CD player so now there's a big hole in the dash that's just the right size for a little travel TV...

As far as i know your only allowed 5% tint on front glass but Slydog on here will know more.

You are allowed to have a screen in the dash but................. If it is to watch T.V. It has to be wired on a switch to the handbrake so when it's off , you cant watch it and vice versa. The only reason i know this is because my friend has just had 4 screens fitted to his mota inc Sat Nav. One in the Passenger side sun visor and one in each head rest. The centre screen in the dash is for the sat nav but will only let you watch the movie on that screen if hand brake is applied. Another way around it is if you use it connected to a rear mounted camera for reversing. Who would know its a T.V ???

According to my tint guy, 5% in the front windows... apparently, you can also do the windscreen to 5% as OEM's do this already.


Front mounted screen cannot distract you from the task in hand (driving), but can by used to SatNav and rear view (as OEMs do this too). So as everyone else has mentioned handbrake switch to stop TV/movies displaying... of course, if you modify this afterwards you are technically in breach of 'due care and attention' and it would be illegal to advise otherwise.


For example, the Pioneer headunit screen for example looks for an earth switch... wire it permanently to earth and hey presto, TV/movies... rear view camera input still interrupts this signal with its own input, and switches back after this link goes off.

Hmm, so when the handbrake is engaged (ie. when the handbrake dash light is on) the TV works....I noticed that the handbrake light is very sensitive - if the handle isn't pushed right to the stops the light remains on, even though the handbrake on the wheels is released.....hmmm..

Following a recent fatal crash involving a motorcycle and a car fitted with tinted front side windows the police will prosecute if they believe lack of vision out of the tinted windows was a contributory factor - many will pull you over for a warning anyway and can prosecute in the same way as a motorcyclist can be prosecuted for using a black visor so it is not worth taking the risk.

ok, I'll go for a bog standard CD player instead - anyone know where I can get one really cheap (ie. the lowest spec available that just plays CDs). Ive' tried Ebay, Amazon, Asda, Aldi etc... and about £80 upwards seems to be the minimum.

Alternatively, anyone here got an old CD player they want to sell?

Go the ebay route but buy from Germany, on average half UK price do a search for Autoradio or Autoradio mit mp3 if you want to be able to play mp3s from CD you will be amazed at how much cheaper they are over there.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Just had another thought. Taking loopholes of the law into consideration and all that............How about if you mounted the T.V suspended from the roof in the middle facing the front.................all you have to do to watch it is look in your mirror !!! That way you will get around any laws about a screen in the dash ! LOL

The only downside is that all the writing will be back to front !!! But .............you shouldnt be reading when your driving !

Sounds OK to me - the speakers in the car are complete rubbish anyway, and all I want to do is listen to a CD or the radio - audio quality is not my priority, price is. I'll check out Argos at the weekend.

Have just had my pass n drivers windows and rear window tinted to match rest of glass,my guy used 15% and is a perfect match,vision through the windows is unaffected, truck looks stunning now.

Hi Robb I will take some pics this weekend and have a go at posting them.
The lower the % the darker the glass ie, 15% lets in more light than 5%.

just as an aside re. TV screens, in georgia USA following the bling trend for screens in the rear headrests its been made illegal to watch porn in a vehicle if it can be seen from out side, was deemed offensive/distracting to following drivers
