  • fuel gauge

Not the usual "oh my god" about fuel consumption (for a 2 tonne truck I don't think it's that bad ), however has anyone got any comments on the accuracy of the fuel gauge? I became a surfer on Saturday and have used lots of diesel driving over things (roundabouts, flower beds, other cars, Ken Livingston etc) since then. Want to run it down until the fuel light comes on, but when will it?! Do they generally work ok? My gauge looks pretty empty but it keeps on going and no light yet! Also is the look of smug satisfaction and superiority on my face normal?

If your grin is iluminating the car, yes thats normal. My fuel gauge sits on full for 60k then drops to 3/4, hits the half mark at about 234, then 1/4 at 344. It goes well past empty before the fuel light finally iluminates, normally about the 400k mark. The furthest I've gone before the light was 424k, but mine appears to have lower than average mpg at 20 most seem to get between 20 and 26.

Welcome to Surfin, it will be a very long time before you stop grinning, and looking in shop windows thinking dam this car looks good.

I picked mine up Sat too. I was told that once you get to the light stage that you have approx 20 miles left in the tank. I don't want to find out.

        Glad you like it ..

Mine stays "overfull" - full tank - for 80-90 klics, then is shoots down to full..then it shoots down quite rapidly to 1/4 full then it stays there for ages.. I have never "succeeded" in driving it till the fuel warning comes on 'cause after 1/4 full it just seems to go on for ever ! So now that I understand the gauge is not very accurate I tend to ignore it most of the time - honest - I had a Citroen that was just the same..I am consistently getting 18-24mpg around town but on moterways with no load I have got 35-40 mpg. So I am not really unhappy given it's size.Anyway cost-wise the plastic bottles help (if you get my drift).Anyway I think that tyres and fuel are the same - the harder you drive the beast - the quicker you will use them up..

hmmm, maybe I'll just go to the garage. Mine gets rapidly to empty and stays there. Light doesn't come on but I take the point above also about not wanting to find out!! Veg oil experiment at the weekend anyway!

It's a 65ltr tank and the fuel light should illuminate with 9lts left. Iv'e checked mine several times and the light is accurate. Like most others when I fill the tank right up the gauge stays on full for quite some time but then drops quite quickly.

Light came on on the way home from work! Needle about 2mm below empty! Filled up now so should be able to monitor MPG easier. I was a bit nervous about running the fuel down that low. When I was a teenager the content of my fuel tank was often worth more than the car if more than a quarter full. Needless to say I ran out of fuel a fair bit!

I cant recommend the 3 litre bottles of XXX XXX from Tesco enough they are sooooo easy to pour - you'll soon get used to them ! (Smell is somehow more "refined" as well).

I find that Tesco is also more runny, and goes down the funnell quicker.

Hello Silversurfer, you mention that it's a 65ltr tank, is that the standard fuel tank size? I've never bothered/always forget to check when I fill up how much it holds. I noticed elsewhere on the web that somebody was offering Surf's for hire to drive in "the bush" presumably in Australia and they mentioned an 80ltr tank. Perhaps this is a bigger than usual tank?

                          Strictly theorectically speaking ....

There are a number of options I feel..

1.Put them in a huge black (for anonymity) plastic binsack, and take them back from whence they came with a big smug recycling smile on your face (my favoured option).
2.Leave them outside for a Charity to pick up..this of course is mean and very sneaky
3.If you are a gardener stick em on top of bean poles to keep the slugs away
4.If you are a camper slide them over guy ropes so people dont trip over them..paint them in bright red or orange first though
5.Cut each one in half, wash them and use them for shed storage for nails and screws
6.As garden decorations..cut each one in half paint in your chosen colour stick a night light in it.. pretty garden lights ..for big gardens ..

                          I could go on..and..on..and..on..and..on. .............................. .................

Er indoors is not happy with me 'cause - (theoretically speaking) - if I were to use it .. I would do it on the garden table by the conseratory .. and it would always spill all over it.
