  • Best Way to break a Surf

Well my engine comversion has gone down the pan

I've decided to cut my losses and scrap my 1990 2.4TD LN130 .

I was offered £1000 for it on ebay as a runner , I was also offered the same for it by a local 4x4 scrapyard.
Thing is there's that many decent parts on it I reckon it's worth more than that .
I've decided to take as many saleable parts off it as possible , whilst leaving it as a rolling shell .
Then I've got the option of sending it to the 4x4 scrappie.....or If anyone local has the room to store it . I'm willing to go halves on the money made on whats left.
I need to dispose of it fairly swiftly , as it's stood on a friends drive at the moment.
What would be worth stripping off it ??
Open to suggestions as I'm at the end of my tether with this money pit.

I was recently in exactly the same situation. I sold mine to another forum member for £1200. They intend to keep a couple of bits and break/sell the rest.

I think I would have got more money for it selling parts myself but it's just a whole lot of hassle, and with a full time job, up to 3 hours of travelling a day, no garage and no storage facilities I just could not do it myself. Plus like yours it was on someone elses drive so I wanted a quickish sale.

Obviously mine was probably worth more than £1200 but if you are selling it as a breaker the person you are selling it to has to be able to make a profit and get something for the massive hassle of stripping it, organising sales and delivering parts.

As for what parts worth stripping off - have you done searches on ebay? You can search on recent finished auctions to see whats gone and for what money etc.
    No longer a Surf owner.

Any chance of the rear spoiler, if you got a spare wheel carrier tail gate I need the plastic bit that houses the light above the number plate and finally I need the interior light unit which has the mirror attached.
I guess you will find a lot of guys on here need bits like this, good luck if you are going to break it, All the guys on here will grap all the good bits quickly then I recon sell it to the scrap guys and just put their number on the forum for anyone who wants other bits.

          Breaking

Hi Geoff sorry to hear bad news why not have another go on ebay selling in 1 lump much better than in drips & drabs. Believe me Geoff it sounds good when you total up what you might get, you would be amazed at what people ask for ie; Heater knobs, lever off seats, lamp holder out of the side light, the cover that goes over the bolts that hold the seats in and so on.
ANYWAY what happened to the engine swop if you dont mine me asking.

THe engine swop bit the dust for a few reasons. I couldn,t do any of the work myself ,so I was depending on someone else.
The engine mounts didn't line straight up as we'd been told . Apparently , my gearbox is probably from a V6 so the bell housings also didn't fit as they were supposed to . The wiring was going to cost at least £300 .etc .etc.
Anyway it all mounted up & just became uneconomical ,so I,m now the proud owner of a scrap surf & a scrap Supra.
The Supra has a really sweet 3Li non-turbo engine btw.
The only good news I've had lately is my surf cylinder head is back from the machine shop .
It was pressure tested A-OK & has been skimmed & rebuilt with new seals etc. All with receipts .Cost me about £100 altogether. I reckon it should be worth at least £450

Not that bit. It was the knob and shaft for the back seats.
I put the embarassed face up coz I PM'd Bob or Linda (Can't remember which) for just that part. It's important to me because I am using a pair of long-nosed pliars every time I want to put the seats down and I have black pinches on my fingers from where they slip off!!!!

Anyway, all this banter is not helping a fellow Surfer with his predicament. Hope you get something sorted soon Geoff.

There's a lot of useable bits on the old 2.4 as a lot of the ancillaries had been reconditioned or renewed.
I'll be selling the fuel pump as a complete item ,so I'm not interested in taking bits off it ....sorry.
Now it's definitely going, I'll be making a list of all the useable stuff I take off .
When it's done , I'll post it in " Parts for Sale " for you all to see .
Anything that doesn't get any takers on here will be going on fleabay.

The rear spoiler is made out of smoked perspex & is called an aerowing . I bought from the US via ebay. It's very firmly attached with adhesive tape. The rear wheel is underneath on mine .
The interior light unit.........I might be able to do that . I'll know better when I get it in the garage & get my screwdriver out.
If anybody else has a request for an odd bit of trim etc . Please send me a pm so I can keep track of them.
