With a tank of our size, every penny per litre stings more than in a hatchback. I have been keeping an eye on the price difference between motorway services and regular forecourts for the work vans, so here is what I have noticed.
Right now, diesel on the motorway is almost 20p a litre more than the average at normal stations across the UK. If you fill up 80 litres, that is about sixteen quid extra. If you do that twice a month on long trips, by Christmas you have basically paid for a set of front pads.
From what I have seen, the price gap is worst on long, empty stretches, the M6 north of Preston or the M5 heading into the south west, where there is no other option for miles. Supermarket forecourts close to a junction are usually the cheapest, and most accept the same fuel cards. Services on A roads often charge motorway prices too, so do not trust the services sign to mean cheaper fuel.
The prices come from the official feed which every forecourt has to update within half an hour. I use https://fuelpricetoday.co.uk/motorway-fuel-prices to plan stops. It lists every motorway station against the local average. If you have got a regular cheap stop for big tanks, post it below. It would be handy to put together a list for the big tanks.
