Surf Virgin Needs Info...

Hi all,

Have just found your forum by chance...

Sorry, I'm sure that you have had newbies like me ask the same old questions and you are fed up with it

As the subject states I am looking into getting a Surf this year sometime (not just yet though) and want to "gen-up" on the specs etc.

1) What engine size is best?

2) Manual or Auto?

3) Which Gen is good (depending on price I know).

4) Good/Bad points to look for?

5) Local suppliers as I need to chop a motor in (I am near Ipswich, Suffolk).

6) Service/Repairs - I am an ex-fitter so can do most things but don't have a garage/special tools.

7) Price guide on types/years.

8) Things you need to do to them...

Enough questions for now, just need a kind soul to answer a dim wit !

1) What engine size is best?

The 3.0 Turbo Diesel. Having owned both the 2.4 and now the 3.0 I can safely say the 3.0 is by far the better engine - much more power and apparently not much different in fuel economy. Also there do not seem to be so many head cracking nightmares with the 3.0

2) Manual or Auto?

Personal choice, both have advantages and disadvantages on and off the road. Not that many manuals about though - most are autos.

3) Which Gen is good (depending on price I know).

2nd and 3rd gens (or even later) are all good - what to get really depends on how much cash you got.

4) Good/Bad points to look for?

Not sure on 3rd gen but for 2nd gen check out the FAQ on my site in the info section.

6) Service/Repairs - I am an ex-fitter so can do most things but don't have a garage/special tools.

Any decent local garage, does not need a specialist, although I normally source all parts myself from www.milneroffroad.com (or get the garage to get parts from there).

7) Price guide on types/years.

Decent late (1995) 3.0 2nd gen can be had for around 5k (private sales) but I have seen them anywhere between 4 and 7k. 3rd gens (1995-2002) seem to start at around 6.5/7k.

8) Things you need to do to them...

Check out the Modifications forum here, also I have details of most of the things I did to my 2.4, and will soon have details of mods on my new 3.0 as and when I do them...

Surf Virgin needs info..........

Hi mate...Just to say I was in the same state of mind as you six months ago
and did an awful lot of research before I finally took delivery last weekend of the most wonderful motor I had ever owned (and thats going back some).
Without all the long drawn out crap, I always wanted a Discovery (just ducked to avoid the cluster bombs) but couldnt afford one. And how gratefull I am that three kids and a wife that shops at Kendals in Manchester stopped me getting one. Right thats the crap so I will precise' the following to give you my facts and the road to a wonderful motor.
1. Researched a 2.4 or 3.0 litre surf (1993-95). Came to the concusion that the 2.4 was'nt on as the heads have a habit of popping.
2. Sussed out the prices...Autotrader on the internet and Exchange and Mart.Came to the conclusion that I was going to have to pay between 6 and 7K for a decent one 50 to 80k on the clock.
3.Local dealers here were buying a lot at auction and whilst I sure they were all secure I was never really sure as regard mileage etc.
4. So researched availability and found a site in Durham who imports Japanese cars.
5. After a lot of phone conversations to make sure it was all cosha ( is that how you spell it) I approached the dealer (durhamdirectimports.co.uk) to go to Japan and actually buy at auction one for me.
6. Agreed deal and off he went.
7. Six weeks later a 3.0 SSR G Ltd Surf with Recaro trim and 41k on the clock has been sourced and if I want it, it is currently in the South China Sea on the way to Bristol.
8. Deposit paid £500:00 so that when it hits the beach its mine.
9. Eventually arrives in Durham late February having survived the Tsunami in the South China Sea with the promise in writing that if I didnt like it I didnt have to have it.
10. Up to Durham early March to take delivery of the most fantastic motor ever. Absolutly immaculate and even the CD worked.
11. Ive built cars since I was a kid but what I got was really special not a mark on it and even a little tin in the compartment at the back with disposable chop sticks in it.
12. The word is.....research well....look around....The Surf is wonderfull with so many electricals extras you wouldnt believe...look after it and it will look after you.........It cost me £6995.00 and worth ever penny. Rodders
