My 1st Surf

Hi, Looking at getting a 2.4TD surf - budget is upto £5k. Mainly for the wife to drive in the week but for me to play with at the weekend. I have heard that getting spares etc. is really expensive and servicing is hard as well? Is this true? Also what sort of mpg should I get from it? I live in Cornwall so any info on local places that sell/service would be appreciated..

they do most bits
get one they great trucks look good and go on forever

Hi Rob and welcome to Surfdom!

If you've got £5k to play with I'd recommend looking for a 3.0. The design of the 2.4 head seems to be flawed and can lead to problems - worth doing some more searching on the forum. Re parts I can recommend two places that supply parts direct: RoughTrax (http://www.toyotahilux.com/index.php...5&category=167) and Auto Jap Spares (http://www.autojapspares.co.uk/Homepage/HomeMenu.htm). The guy at RoughTrax is spot on with advice and very helpful.

Basic maintenance, oil change, oil filter, air filter etc is a doddle. I do my own so it can't be that difficult!

Re insurance - there are loads of posts on the site. I'd suggest that you shouldn't need to pay more than £400 fully comp if you look around. Try Tett Hamilton and Tescos for a starter. I paid less than £350 at Tett Hamilton - that was fully comp and I didn't need to transfer my no claims from my other car!!

what part of cornwall you from? i got my surf from Treverbyn motors in Camborne and they do all the servicing and anything else that needs doing.They are the only garage that i will let work on the surf as he does all the work on the imports from the sales part of the garage which is run by Mike and Brian of Ensign cars

I recently had to replace all brake pads and front disks and half of the exhaust, to get through the MOT, bits cost £250 plus Vat.

You could pay £400 just for exhaust on some modern cars!

Genuine bits are dear, but most "consumables" are cheap and available from places quoted above.

You can afford a 3.0L, I bought mine on Ebay!

Thanks for your help and info - got over the first hurdle at the weekend and managed to get a test drive in a 2.4 for myself and the better half. She thought it was great and is quite happy to get one - now all I need to do is find the right one...

You could pay £400 just for exhaust on some modern cars!

We just paid £350+ fitting for a new catalytic converter on one of the works Audi's!

Glad there's no CAT on mine- I can get a complete Surf stainless steel exhaust for less than that!

For £5k you should easily be able to pick up a nice 3.0 - I'd definately advise going for the 3.0 over the 2.4 if you can afford it.
