    Almost, it goes between the turbo and the intake, the turbo pressureises the air, but also heats it up, which is bad, so you cool it afterwards and then toss it in the motor. Cooler air=denser air=more oxygen for the volume of air=bigger bang in motor=more power.

      Hi guys,
      Glad this came up cos i'm getting a P reg 3rd gen intercooler in 5 weeks and didn't have a clue how it worked really. The dealer only said it gave out more BHP.

      Here is a picture that was sent to me

          The idea I had in my head involved some pretty straight-foreward plumbing.
          Why do some after market intercoolers appear to have rubber hoses? Surely they would melt/perish.
          So if the intercooler goes between the turbo and the inlet manifold there are adaptors that will have to be bought/made. Ah well, that probably explains why the specialists want to charge £1500 to fit one.

            Having a look at that site, part of the reason for the high price (£1200) is that it includes a turbo unit amongst other bits, bound to push the price up.
            If you want to have a go at making your own, a bare intercooler from them runs out at just £100

              i guess if you have a big enough bonnet scoop then you can fit almost anything across the top of the engine without a body lift?
              No room in front of the 2.4 is there?

                As a complete intercooler virgin I found this site helpful. The guy goes right down to basics. The car he is talking about is a petrol but I guess the principles still apply.

                  I was having a mooch this morning and the only space I could see on my 2.4 is in front of the engine rad, to the right of the electric fan. I understand that some 2.4s don't have the electric fan on the drivers side of the rad.
                  I was also looking at the possibility of mounting it atop the engine and cutting a hole for a scoop. As the air intake is presently behind the n/s headlamp, not very efficient, I was toying with the idea of splitting the scoop and using a small portion of it for the air intake. Alternatively I might use a snorkel. Oh decisions, decisions............

                    I'm getting into this intercooler thing now. One thing I am a bit confused about is why some coolers have two pipes and some have a branch pipe on one side. Is this for a dump valve?

                    If I put a cooler on my 2.4EFI will I need a dump valve?

                    Will the ECU have to be chipped to allow for the intercooler or will the ECU "learn" to deal with the cooler mixture?
                    Could I do any damage by fitting an intercooler? I guess that the ECU makes the diesel/air mixture a little leaner on frosty mornings anyway.

                    Is the bit on top of the engine that says EFI Turbo Diesel just a fancy link pipe and could it be replaced with any correct sized turbo tube?

                    Would fitting a front cooler introduce lag? In other words is it better to have the intercooler as close as possible to the inlet manifold?

                      me too...
                      on top of the engine will have more heat transfer coming from below but then it will involve less piping. How big does the intercooler need to be do you think to make it worthwhile?

                        I saw a super duper low flying motor on the M1. It was so modified that I couldn't tell waht make it was. That had the intercooler mounted in front of the radiator grille. I wonder if an intercooler could go behind the A-bar mmmmmmmmmm.
                        Any intercooler experts got answers to the earlier questions about pipe length etc?????
