Nethen, I've put max payload in the search facility and nowt comes up, but I'm sure I've seen it on here somewhere!

Anyhow, can anyone tell me the maximum payload for both 2nd & 3rd gen 3ltr Smurfs?

I'm pretty sure it is around 1 Tonne. The search engine on this site doesn't like anything less than four letter words, that is why so many people ask about the EGR mod, ECT, ADD, PAS, er.......... etc

Well I put payload into the search and got this

Altough some have carried close to a ton in theirs it is not to be reccomended. Many assume that as the Surf is based on the regular Hilux pick-up chassis it shares its load carring capabilities which is not the case. The pick-up utilises leaf-springs which endow it with a greater load carrying ability than the Surfs coils, just look at the amount of 2nd Gens with saggy arses, the rear springs are too soft just for the normal carrying loads of the Surf without loading it to the hilt. Remember the rear springs are already carrying a heavier body than the pick-up, and that's before you load it up.

Around 600Kg is mentioned in the above thread as the max payload for a standard Surf, and I recall similar figures cropping up in other threads also.

A good bet is to go and speak to the ministry at a heavy goods inspection station they will tell you the right figures. Bearing in mind the car sits on close to 2 tonne and the maximum gross you could acheive in this configuration is 3.5tonne but be careful if you are caught over weight its anything up to a £1000 a tonne.


And as someone has already said people quote the figures from the pick up you have also got to take into consideration the extra body weight of the cab

If it's any help, I have a 1993 Owner's Manual for the 4Runner that came from the good old US of A.

I cannot believe this, but, it says 140kg / 300lb for vehicles sold outside of Canada, and 200kg / 440lb for vehicles sold in Canada.

It does seem very light to me, but perhaps in North America they realised about the weak rear springs.

Wonder what one of the translated Jap manuals will say......

Well that is what it says for the "Cargo Weight Rating". Perhaps it allows for a full compliment of passengers and the driver already being in the car.
