  • Got rust?

Ever wonder if the importer undersealed your truck properly?

Our 4Runner wasn't ever done, and after 15 years in this country the wheel arches now look like this.....

which after pulling the trim and cleaning looked even more entertaining...

so I decided the ol' truck needed spruceing up a little before the Ireland trip and set to work.

First I cut back the outer skin to clean metal, then trimmed back the inner skin a little more so the outer skin over lapped it, then grabbed a pair of pliers and folded the metal back to give it a nice edge, instead of just a sharp end to the metal.

Considering I'm not a fan of bodyworking, it came out not bad....

then a few blobby bits of welding to hold both parts together...

had a little trouble at the front as the inner skin was a lot shorter than the outer after cutting the rust out.....

So the hunt was on to find a strip of thin metal to fill it with, then I noticed the pickup sitting there, looking all unloved and ignored!

so I made it feel wanted..........

by cutting a hole in the door!!!!! MWahahahahaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

and the 4Runner was patched, and a little piece of the pickup will live on forever ....

Now its looking a lot nicer than the old rusty effort, just a bit of filler, and a liberal coat of stone chip spray underneath, and then a couple of coats of Toyota blue, plus the added bonus is there is room for a whole lot bigger tyre under now!!!!

I think it looks better than the smaller orginal arch opening.

Now to do the other side.

A positive attitude wont solve all your problems but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort!

Now I get it. You are supposed to hide your blobby welding! I've been too open about mine. Nice tidy job though and a bonus (the room for big wheels - not earning the opportunity to do Lindas bearing).
                    It's only a hobby!

I take it the pickup has been scrapped now then?

Not technically, mechanically it will be the same, just externally it will be more acceptable here and not in the basement............
