  • This Is How The Pit Used To Look

This is similar to how Devils Pit used to look when I was a nipper.

Its a shame they filled it in really but they were worried about ramblers falling over the edge!
    It's only a hobby!

Ricks answer first. They filled it in with the spoil from the widening of the A6 Barton Cutting, the Silsoe Bypass and the creation of junction 10A on the M1. Rumour has it that some of the soil from the Jubilee Line extension went in there too.

Mikes answer: No, it's a place down in Kent or Essex (can't remember which) called The Canyon. They use it for off roading. They have a rock crawling section.

If you went through the access gate we now use, not long after Barton Lime Works closed, you went up the track to about where the car park is now and then down several hundred feet into the quarry. It was like being on a Dr Who film set. Much fun could be had with a moto-x bike but you had to know it pretty well or you might just launch yourself into space! There were huge barns cut into the side of the quarry where they once secured the Scammels, bulldozers and earth movers. It was a great playground.
