  • Interesting MPG point

I just came across this page which has an interesting comment:

Do not touch the 2.4 as the fuel consumption is actually worse.
I was thinking of getting a 2.4 TD as I beleived this to be the most fuel efficient. Am I right? Am I wrong?

The general opinion is that the 3.0td is better on fuel than the 2.4 because the extra power makes it easier to drag the 2 tonnes around therefore the engine is not working as hard. My 2.4 does about 18-21 around the doors, depending on the urgency of the mission (going to work or coming home). The 2.4 does tend to be a little breathless too compared to the 3.0
You can take my 4x4 from me when you prize the keys from my cold, dead hand.

They are obviously not forum members. The general consensus is that there is very little difference in fuel consumption between the 2.4 and the 3.0. The 3.0 has the advantage that it has a bit more grunt and doesn't need to be pushed as hard as the 2.4 to get up to speed. I have been driving my 2.4 for 18 months without (touch wood) any major problems.
There was a bit of a debate about engine revs v cruising speed a while back. Mine cruises at 70MPH at around 2,400RPM giving me approx 26-28/gallon on a run. Around town and towing the caravan? I refuse to even think about it but it keeps me fit running round to fill up!!!

When I'm pulling my twin axle Abbey Spectrum, sticking to 55-60, I reckon on between 22-24 mpg. Not too bad really considering the six tons of c**p the kids insist on taking everywhere with them.

I know the feeling. The kids have grown up but our Abbey County Dorset 2 berth may as well be a wardrobe with wheels! Mrs KS likes her clothes.

Hmmmm says replacement radio almost impossible to fit unless you a professional & fit band expander.
I say band expanders are c**p unless you live in a really good reception area and even then they are limited.
Also makes a lot of us on here professionals as loads have exchanged the unit to UK spec ones with no real trouble.

Cool, just want I wanted to hear.

I'm gonna whip round a couple of local dealers and blag some test drives so I can get a feel for what a surf should be like, so when I start looking properly I can hopefully spot a bad'un.

Just adding 3.0TD to my list of preferred engines right now...

my only gripe with mine is the fuel consumption (2.4td).
the left hand side of my needle on the gauge is scorched, due to the speed of re-entry while coming down.....
uses juice same sort of rate as my cossie(now sold)
                  cheers all
                  CARL......
2.4 T.D,s should carry a government health warning

Just out of interest. A silly question, Is the needle on the fuel gauge supposed to show the amount of fuel all the time (even without ignition or even the keys) as my truck always shows the amount of fuel and its the first motor that I`ve had that does not have a sender thats linked to the ignition of the car.

Yes it shows even when ignition is not on.

                        2.4 or 3.0 ?

Well i did extensive 'research' into which to go for, the 2.4 td or the 3.0 litre td. and being big 4 wheel drive people over here in New Zealand i thought they would know what thay are talking about.
The opinion was not to touch the 2.4 with the proverbial bargepole as the engine is 'a bit suspect' a few of my friends can give me chapter and verse about engine re-builds.........
All i can say is that my 3.0 l td goes really well, when i put the pedal to the mettle, she goes........... as does the fuel guage, but hell we all know that they're not cheap to run.
Incidently, i took a Nissan Terrano out for a test spin once.......(wash my mouth out),no don't laugh.......it pulled like my old granny, i could almost walk there faster !

It is so heavily damped too. When I fill my tank right up it doesn't show full until I am about 10 miles down the road. It then stays pegged against the end stop until I have done about 50 miles.

Hmmm, unfortunately, running costs are my major consideration with getting a surf. Currently my passat does 300 miles off about £45 of petrol and I can't afford for it to get much worse than that..
