departure angle

Hi,

Ive been making changes to my 94, KZN130. Ive put on a snorkel, arb winch bar (winch next when I can afford it!!), OME suspension and 31 10.5 MT tires. Its going really well ... except the departure angle isnt great at all. My spare tyre is under the car too.

Im thinking about ripping off the rear bumper and moving the exaust somewhere.

Im wondering what my options are?? Does anyone have any idea?? Id love to get a black steel bumper made to match the front with hooks on etc ... but Im guessing this is going to be a mission??

any ideas would be much appreciated.

Yes- the Surf's departure angle isn't the best....

Have you tried looking at some of the US 4Runner sites? I've seen this kind of mod done on 4Runners, I think you can even buy a new, more robust rear bumper.

Personnally I installed a hefty towbar. It doesn't improve the departure angle but it takes the knocks & bumps offroad and offers some protection to the exhaust.

If I remember correctly, there was a site for Soren Steel or Soren Towbars????? cant be exact on this but they made a new bumper with integrated towing points.

See the attached pic. This was traced from a photo when I had BFG AT 31.10.5 R15's on. Very approx: 40 deg at the front 30 deg at the back.

I've now changed to 750/16s (7.5 inch tyres on 16 inch steel rims). Bigger and bigger tyres will increase your approach and departure angles.

I have removed the underslung rear wheel and mounted it on a swing away carrier. I am planning to chop the exhaust off near the box and re-route it through the rear "bumper" at the side of the vehicle thereby removing the exhaust pipe from the equation.

I have a tow ball fitted on a drop plate attached to the tow bar - when I need to, I remove this "plough". Another thing would be to remove the tow bar completely and get the rear bumper rebuilt in plain tubular steel but that's in the future.

On pretty much my first off road trip in my Surf I ended up having to reverse out of a hole. This resulted in catching the end of the exhaust, and crumpling it quite badly. My fix was to cut the exhaust pipe under the body as it heads towards the passenger side rear wheel, and attaching a chrome end piece (readily available from your local HalFrauds) thus bringing it's exit point out just behind the mudflap. This fixes the exhaust pipe as a potential snag point, and increases the exit angle a few degrees. The only problem I've had is that the kink in the exhaust caused by the 'incident' bent the pipe as it exits the back box a bit further with the result that the pipe rubs against the mudflap and has slightly melted it. However if you do this mod before it gets caught then it should exit clear of the mudflap.

bundubasher, when you put the tyre on the back ... did you just hook on a surf tyre swing away thing? What else had to be done there? Im thinking the number plate will be out of veiw etc.

Just nosey.. is it a safari job? And was it a nightmare to fit..?

Yes its a safari ... and yes it wasnt a super easy job. My brothers a panelbeater so he pretty much did the lot while I watched ... The rubber hose that came with it to connect from the actual snorkel to the filter didnt fit so he welded a pipe onto the filter to extend so it did. It did take a while.

If you dont want to use the standard surf spare tyre carrier, you might want to look at this, which if you are making at rear tow bar then I recon this is the way to go, tell me what you think?

There are also 2 australian firms that make them for our cars but they are very expensive, about 1000 euros last time i asked, but they might be cheaper for you as they would not have to transport them as far.

You need to reinforce the rear quarter of the surf before you add the rear wheel carrier to take the extra weight

Exhaust mods - mine is as described below - exit just behind the rear wheel (after we crunched it once too often off road)

Tony has modified our 4 runner to exit just in front of the rear wheel - more extreme but makes the 2.0l sound like a V8!!

ARB do a rear bumper - but will be costly I guess!!

Do you have some pics of your truck?? I'd love to take a look!

did you get that reinforcing plate for the rear quarter to mount the rear wheel carrier to?

Was it a Toyota part or did you get something fabbed up?
