I have been told by those that have driven using both types of tyre that ats are better than mts. Personally I only have experience with ats, and as yet haven't got stuck yet.
      Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

After many here singing their praises, I got GG A/T's fitted a couple of weeks back & they've been excellent in the snow.

Both are good if you have decent tyres, I have AT's on the Patrol and had MT's on the surf and generally found the AT's performed better.
                    Nissan Patrol for on-road, and a Land-Rover 110 shed for off-road :-)

I have just been in the French alps and almost every 4x4 has BF Goodrich's on (not sure which ones) must be a reason for this?

They're cheaper to buy over there?

Nothing is cheap to buy in France never mind the alps.

Mines been to Keith and back in major ice, cold and snow, via Edinburgh, which had it bad and on the day the Forth bridge was closed. Slow-going and even the motorways were down to one lane with 2 ruts in, but mine coped admirably on the set of Bridgestones AT's it came with. Did take the set of Heavy-duty Rudd-matic landy chains we own for our van, but never needed to take them out of the bag
The only issue I had was my washer bottle freezing solid overnight in Kieth, despite being full of neat screenwash, because it only goes down to minus 7c (this I know now!) and it hit minus 17c in Kieth and had to stop regularly on the way home to chip ice off the wipers.
