  • IFS or Solid Front Axle

I am looking to purchase a 1990 Hilux surf in Japan,It will be only one of a few in Canada,I want to know if the SURF has IFS or Straight Front Axle?
Does anybody know waht year the japanese models switched to IFS.
Also I wonder if the Diesel engien the Surf comes with is widely used on other Toyota,It seems the 2000 cc gas engine is not available in canada, yet the surf V6 3000 cc engine is the same as it's North Americam counterpart 4 Runner. Conversely in USA and Canada thier was no diesel engine 4 runner made in 1990 ,only V6 3000cc and 2.4 liter 22R gas engine.
Does anybody know if the block is the same on all 2.4 liter engines ,gas or diesel.
The reason I ask is because if the engine dies on this surf,It is better to replace the engine with a used one,
It would be nice to know what the Bell Housings are compatible with?
I assume that the engine blocks were probably all uniform in size, with the exception of the V6.
Any comments ? Any experts out there?
    thanks
    Phil

    IFS for 1990.

1st gen Surfs/4Runners are solid axle from 84-84, then went IFS, 2nd gen started in 89 till 95, are all IFS.

I'd guess the motors are different, but you don't see 22R series petrol motor here (maybe in Celicas). Our petrol 1st gens are 2lt 3Y's and the pickup motors are 18R and 4Y's

A 1990 Surf will have a 2.4 L/T turbo diesel motor, don't think the L/TE EFI motor goes that far back.

Check the gearbox codes, 1st and 2nd Gen Surfs have different gearboxes, so don't know if they interchange easily.

I think the 2LTE was introduced 3rd to 4th quarter 1990. My LTE was produced Oct '90.

        2 liter

I did some research on the 2 liter engine, actually the Japanese have a heavy road tax on over 2 liter cars/trucks.So that explains the 2 liter engine and why it is not in North America.
Although it probably would have been a good seller, the original engine in toyota HILUX trucks here was the 20r engine,I believe that one was a 2000 cc,does anyone know the specs of the 2 lt?Is it known as the 20 r in europe too?

The 2L/T is a 4 cyl in-line 2.4 litre turbo charged diesel engine with a mechanical injection system. The later version (2L/TE) has an electronic engine management system.
