  • Good mechanic troubleshooter nr Bath/Bristol?

    Hi,

Anybody recommend somebody who knows his surfs near Bath/Bristol? I've got a selection of issues that my local garages either are not interested in or say "proabable a head, 1.2-2K just to find out.".

It need somebody to look at - Very infrequent overheating on long trips(hasn't for 2 years)
    - Oil in water, but not water in oil.

Runs fine normally, but I rarely travel more than 50 miles. I have some longer trips this winter so need to get in looked at as I don't what to be left stranded.

If it is a new head then so be it, but I'd like somebody who really knows surfs to look at it first.

    Thanks

    Chris

Your best bet is to get hold of Tonyn and Linda at 4x4toys

For good independant service, a trip down to Basingstoke, to see TonyN will be the best bet.
      It just does, OK?

I can test the cooling system for the presence exhaust gassing in the coolant, any garage should be able to do this, although its not 100% as some time really small cracks only open up when the engine is hot when driving, you can't replicate this with the truck idling with the tester on it, or even reving it a bit.

The only 100% way is to hoik the head off, but it won't cost what you've been quoted to do that, well under half that IMHO. (Remember if the head is sound you still need new head bolts and gaskets)

You rarely get oil/water contamination in Toyotas with head issues and the cracks only go from combustion chambers to coolant. THe only oil passage through the head is in one corner and the gasket has a built in seal. But it may happen.

Water/oil mixing is usually from worn gaskets in the oil cooler.

Tony thanks for the advice. I'll mull it over, but it sounds like that selling it cheap as is, and buying a small car might be my best option in my current financial state :-(
