So we packed up the kids and off we went and bought a '93 2.4 SSR-G surf for my wife today...... all was good until I noticed her in the rearview mirror, pull over on the motorway hardshoulder in a puff of smoke.!

Apparently as she was trying to overtake a car at about 70 mph, the surf stopped accelerating, so she pulled back in and then the engine noise became louder and started vibrating as it hadn't before. She looked in the mirror and saw white/grey smoke so pulled over immediately, at which point the smoke came out from under the bonnet!

By the time I realised what had happened and pulled over I was a few hundred metres on up the motorway, After about 5 mins Laura drove the surf very slowly up to behind me. I opened the bonnet and noticed green fluid on top of the air filter housing that wasn't there 30 mins earlier - the engine also looked like it was shaking more vigorously in the engine bay than it did previously, and when the engine was revved, it sounded ragged, as if it wasn't running evenly on all cylinders. (I had actually commented to the previous owner how tight and smooth it sounded compared to my surf!) Anxious to get off the motorway we swapped over and I slowly drove a mile up the hardshoulder until we got off at a junction, where we parked up. With no battery left on either of our phones, two grouchy kids and the sun going down, we drove on home, sadly leaving her shiny surf behind!

The good new is that a new head was put on by an experienced mechanic 3 months ago. So as I'm sitting here getting slowly drunk i would appreciate any suggestions....

My main query at this point would be - could I drive it slowly to a surf owning mechanic 30 miles away, or should I get a trailor and avoid risking doing any more damage?

    Thanks for your opinions folks.

You need to check all the fluid levels before can really comment.

Hows the temp, oil pressure, engine check lights... etc etc.....?

    Details man, we're not psychic!

(oh, and if you got it off a dealer its his problem..)

Sorry to hear your misfortune but in my opinion you would best bestto recover it with a trailer as youdont know what further damage you will do driving it.

lol Tony - oil pressure was in the lower third of the gauge, temp was just below middle of the gauge, no dash lights were on, except for the 'O/D off' button (this was because Laura had never used an auto before and switched it accidentally) and when the engine was started again a continuous beeeeeep sounded and then went off.

And it was a private sale, but the guy is a member of this forum and seems genuinely gutted that this has happened.

Growler that is my gut feeling as well, its just I can't get one until Monday/Tuesday and i'm not to chuffed at leaving the new purchase sitting in a layby til then!

Was the head a new one? If so, where from?

Albannach - it was a brand new head, but will ask where from and post up.... I had started reading earlier on the forum about lesser quality new heads!

If it was an active forum member you bought it from, I'd like to think they took heed and used a good quality head.

From the 30mins i spent with him today, and the fact that he is buying another Surf, I am hoping/thinking the same.

The head apparently was from Peer Parts and was one with the modified waterports, and may still be under warranty....

That's a plus, if it's only 3 months old; it will be under warranty. You need to confirm it was correctly fitted (new bolts and gaskets) as well. All this is assuming it's the head or gasket that's gone, it could be something else that's caused the problem.

LOL, a 2.4 can do 70 (down hill...) it should be able to cruise at that speed apart from hills all day.

Also revs are electronically limited, while its not ideal long term it won't have over-reved by having O/D off even at motorway speeds, but it might have given it a good clean out!

If all your coolant and water levels are still stable and correct its most likely to be a fuel blockage somewhere, or maybe a timing/ timing belt issue, although you should get an engine check light if the ECU can't get the pump sensors and the crankshaft sensor to line up properly.

You may want to get the compression checked to prove its mechanically ok if nothing obvious seems wrong, and before spending lots of money.

Do the fault codes, this will show up and electrical sensor, timing or fuel pressure. They don't all show up as check light while its running.

cheers Tony... its in a recovery yard at the minute, and will be left round to a 4x4 mechanic who is a surf driver on Monday. I'll pass on your advice.

Hopefully the damage and financial pain will be minimal!

I would not attempt to restart that engine until the timing belt was checked. It may have skipped a tooth or two or worse.
