Just stuck 5ltrs in it with some fule treatment. Wanted to run it through for a while.

Had the battery on charge all day yesterday and last night.

It clearly hasn't taken any as it won't start, now. Just...click, click, click, click. Connections look decent enough.

And of course...if it's the starter motor...that's under the inlet manifold

Might just get the fecker out over the coming weeks and be done with it.

When the starter motors pack up, they don't make any sound.
The clicking noise is low battery power. Did the dash gauges ficker when you tried starting?

The dash icons lit up but I didn't observe the gauges (the cluster needs removing and some caps fixing anyways).

I'll go out and stick the surf on it

Can't believe how dirty this thing is.

Zero gauge flickering, Vince. Just checked.

Popped up to my local factors to get a new battery (I'd need one anyway). £100

Couldn't even be arsed to go and look at alternatives.

Picked up a battery, local, for £20, from someone breaking their motor.

                Started up no problem.

But the smoke is definitely water heavy.

Oil looks fine, coolant looks fine, engine sounds smooth...but the smoke out the back is basically steam. Revving it spewed oily water all over the Surf!

All signs are fine other than the shite coming out of the tail.

Time to go psycho on someone who's only a 2 hour drive away.

Run it up to temperature first and see if the steam clears. Could just be condensation burning off, the motor has been sat idle for a while don't forget.
The black 'oily' deposit is soot mixed with the condensation from inside the exhaust.

Thanks Vince, back off I go

I did run it until it settled at just under half way on the temp gauge. But you're giving me hope.

These are supposed to be pretty bullet-proof. So fingers crossed.

Look under the oil filler cap for 'mayonaise'.

Ran it again for a while and it seemed to die down a little. But not completely. Revs were the same ploom of smoke.

Forgot all about the mayonnaise test. Will check now.

So I was 90% sure after today's tests (I've never seen that sort of spray from condensation if I'm honest).

Went to check the cap (forgot about that so, thanks Vince ) and basically the branding of Hellman's was the only thing missing!

"Is it a gasket like the top of a bottle?"

                          "No, it's not. It's definitely ####ing not!"

90% sure has gone to 99.9% sure.

I may get locked up for my reaction.

PS. The remaining 0.01% is some mayo can still come from short journeys (or no journeys) and the fact the oil and water looks perfectly fine.

                            0.01%, guys

Gonna do a compression test on the weekend.

                              May as well, weather permitting.

I'll at lease become accustomed to some of the upper engine as just getting to the plugs is a nice long journey
