hot inside

hi all hope your all good ?
i have a problem when its hot outside i notice that the plastic covers around the gear stick get verry verry hot . this happens about 15mins into driving .. i have taken the plastic covers off and i can see the top of the gear box and the floor ... is there ment to be a heat plate there ? the surf was a auto at first and it was converted to a manual b4 i got it any ideas thanks ....:
