Just posting this to ease the job of searching, for anyone suffering the symptoms above.
Under the kick plate on the drivers side foot-well is a 10amp fuse - check it is intact, if blown, change it out and all will be well once again!
Likely cause is a short circuit, especially if you have tow-bar electrics socket.
Found this out, after searching a lot of threads and was just at the point of trading in my Surf for a bicycle! Thanks guys, this forum is a God-send.
