I've just had to take out the starter motor on my 3rd gen.
It's been playing up for the last two weeks after I let the batteries go a bit flat, I think the low voltage finally killed the contacts.
It was actually very easy to get out! It took me longer to bugger about jacking it up than to remove it.
Here's how I did it if you want to know.
Get kettle on,
Loosen wheel nuts,
Jack up and support with axle stands
Take off the wheel and remove the smaller rear most plastic cover under the wheel arch, you will now see the starter motor,
Disconnect the batteries,
Unbolt the main live wire from the starter (17mm spanner)
Unplug the solenoid plug,
Unbolt the two nuts holding in the starter (17mm spanner)
Wiggle out the starter down between the chassis rails and don't drop it!
That's it you're done.
Cost me £16 for new contacts all in.
