Top DJ's dont just do one club a night either, they'll do the rounds and maybe squeeze in three for an hour or two long set on Friday and Saturday nights, when you think a decent sized dance club can take 100 grand in tickets sales in a night, you can see theres money in it, some of the big warehouse parties back in the 90's were pulling in a quarter mill in entrance fees for a single party. :S

I have a couple of friends who went through the London DJ school, a decent DJ can read a crowd and play exactly the right stuff at the right time as well as entertaining you, its not as simple as just bunging on a record when the previous one finishes.

When I was a DJ, I made money playing other peoples records too, it's what DJs do. The difference is, I was getting £15 a night; at his peak, Carl Cox was reputed to be on over £30k per night (a percentage of the door); Tiesto probably wouldn't bother getting out of bed for as litle as that.

You're right though, Andy, it must be nice to be as good as he is.

Carl Cox was £1k per hour in about 1997. It was ridiculous then, but people will pay so much to see someone putting records on that they're worth it. I've never really understood why

Along with the rest of them, Tiesto probably makes the majority of his money from his production work and running record labels. I presume the record he's playing there whilst handing out Harry Belafonte 78s is probably one that he wrote.
