    Isn't Ireland great.

    AutoAdvan can sell me a gen2 Surf 2.4TD for £2200 FOB (about €3300). Then there's about £650 (about €980) shipping costs, and maybe another £200 (€300) agent's fees. All in - about £3050 (€4580).

Not bad? Then Bertie Aherne wants:
    VAT @ 21% = €693
    DUTY @ 10% = €330
    VRT @ 30% = €990
    1 year road tax = €821
    Total: €2834
Plus cost of car + shipping = €4580
    Total €7414 (£4942)

Yes, the Irish govt wants 61% of the car's cost!

So that's the "import direct from Japan" route scuppered for me...

NO! Not well done! That's crap! That's for a late 91/early 92! I accept the VRT, and I have budgeted for that, but VAT & DUTY as well is a rip off. I'll go back to looking for a good Surf privately in Ireland...

Why not register it as commercial, no vrt to worry about then. There are places out there that will do this even with the seats still in it!

Rip off isn't it!, But still a saving over the forecourts here where I've seen '91 Surfs, in poor condition asking for over €9000!

You can however bring your costs down. As Ciaran has suggested, if commercial is acceptable to you, your vrt charge will drop to aprox €50 and your road tax to approx €250, there's a saving of €1500 for year 1 and a road tax saving of over €500 each year thereafter.
Also I do know of a guy here in Dublin who imported a mistu some years ago, the japanese vendor sent him 2 bills of sale, the legit one direct to him, and another lower value one with the vehicle and copied to him which enabled him to make a substantial saving on the CET & VAT (VRT is based on OMSP so would not be affected by this). If you could arrange this there are clearly more savings to be had.
Should you decide to go the commercial route, its relativly simple, remove rear seats, put section of floor to cover where they were, spray rear windows, most dealers here consider it an afternoons work which costs them less than €100 when they do it themselves.

                Hmmm...

So if I could get him to invoice me for, say €2500 instead of €3300, the vat (21%) would only be €525 and the duty (10%) would only be €250 - that puts me at 3300 (real price) + 525 + 250 = €4075.

Then if I take the seats out and black-out the rear windows, it's a commercial, so I can pay VRT at 13% (not 30% for passenger) = €325 - that brings me up to 4075 + 325 = €4400.

                Then add road tax at €253 for commercial (not €821 for passenger), and insurance at (maybe - a guess) €750 (not €922 passenger). 4400 + 253 + 750 = €5403.

Then add cost of shipping & agent's fees at about €1300. 5403 + 1300 = €6703 for a 91/92 commercial Surf including bogus insurance, that I won't legally be insured to carry my family in after I put the seats back in. Imagine if I was in an accident...

If I didn't need to carry folk, it'd be an option...

But I do, and there are passenger 90/91 Surfs in Buy & Sell from €3500 to €5250 (before haggling), ready to go - no dicking around... Obviously there's insurance on top of that, but at least I and my Toyota mechanic uncle will be able to give the car a really thorough check over. And I won't have to wait 5 weeks for it to arrive.

Thanks guys for your replies. I guess I had made my mind up before I even made the first post on this thread. Just highlighting how much of a rip off country this is, I suppose...

Anyway, what's to say my first Surf will be my last - if I like it as much as I think I'm going to, I may be upgrading to a newer Surf (still a gen2 - most handsome!) in a year or two...

Well at least you've researched it well and will know what you're getting, both value and vehiclewise.
There's plenty of good value in Surfs already here as you rightly point out, go for it, hope to see you surfin soon
