Longer shocks

I noticed the other day that when I jack up the front of the truck, with a 2" lift and standard shocks I only have about 40mm of downward travel. If I fit longer shocks, do they actually give any more travel or are they just longer with the same travel? If so, then is there any reason why I cant make some shock extenders to lengthen the mounts and keep the soft/hard bit?

You will get more travel with longer shocks, thats what they're for.
