Just had 4 new tyres fitted this morning and the surf now flicks in and out of 4wd at a flick of a switch, off-road or on (open center diff). It used to take quite a while for the flashing wheel diagram to stop on the dash. The 3rd Gen system must be sensitive to uneven / odd tyre ware??

So if yours hesitates to lock into 4wd or disengage then its prob down to the tyres and not mechanical fault.
