  • Help with rim offset

I currently have 3rd gen rims with 60mm Roughtrax spacers bought from Joker. I've been looking at fitting bigger wider tyres and new rims. I need some clarification (i've asked before but further reading has confused me some)

My current setup has the rim almost level to Surf arches.
I would like to buy 10" wide -43 offset rims. If I fit 12.5" wide tyres will these stick out beyond the arches? I'm not wishing to fail an mot.

Does anyone know the distance from the hub to the arch line?
If anyone could help I would really apreciate some advice from those that know!
    cheers!

dont worry about it for the MOT mine stick out a good few inches and i have never had an mot fail. infact it has never even been mentioned. obviously if they stick out load and passers by could get pulled under them then you might have a problem!!

Thats the problem I don't know and no ammount of googling has led me to find it
They are standard Surf 3rd gen alloys as I understand :s

I was going to post on the Aussy site as I did a search for the Rim I want and a few people on there have them, but they dont say what size or offset.
        Oh Nana, what's my name?

What size width and offset do you have? You run 33" tyres right?

The tyres sticking out past the arches is nothing to do with the mot.
It will be down to the local police if they want to pull you or not.
I had my 33x12.5x15's on 15x10 rims with a -52 offset which pushed the tyres out past the arches a fair bit and i was never pulled for it

                Thanks Rich and Ross,
This is where the conversation routed last time. Considering the ones I plan on buying are -43 offset this will mean they wont stick out as much as yours did. Do you know how much they stick out? from -43 to a -52 this is 9mm difference each side. (if I understand this right oo-err)
My friend who does MOTs says I'm not to get wheels that stick out past the arch or it will fail. But with the 5" lift is it less noticable Rich?

just keep your old wheels for MOT time if you dont think it will pass but unless the guy is having a bad day then it should be fine. i will take a pic tonight down the side to show you how much they stick out.

Nice, thanks! I'll try and find out what offset you have too.
How are you getting on with the new purr of your truck?

this is mine without the wheelspacers

once i had the wheelspacers on they stuck out really nice and still went through the mot ok.My tester is strict as hell and will fail on the slightest thing. If your tester Tony is saying he will fail it then i would report him to Vosa whoever it is in charge of mot's as he can't fail it on that

mine stick out a little bit more than that with the spacers fitted but not much. get them you will be fine! post some pics up and then i might get some as my wheels have seen better days.

i have had a quote of £35 per wheel for powder coating them. but i cant decide what is best to do!

                          With reference to these:

                          http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm
                          http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_410.htm
                          http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_420.htm

I can't find anything that suggests it has anything to do with the MOT but I know I've heard/read it somewhere about the wheels not sticking out past the wheel arches. Possibly contruction & use regs? Honestly not sure...

Had a quick squizz at the IVA test manual (HERE) and the only sections of interest I can find are:

                              Section 16 (Exterior Projections)

                              4. Wheel arches must be ‘turned inwards’, or have a radius of curvature of at least 2.5mm
                              12. Any protrusion of a wheel, wheel nut, hub cap, or wheel disc from the wheel rim must be at least blunted.
                              13. Wheels must not be fitted with wing nuts.
                              14. The upper half of a wheel must not protrude beyond the body plan form (disregarding tyres, wheel discs, and central wheel securing nuts).
                              15. Any wheel disc or central wheel securing nut that project beyond the body plan form must have a radius of curvature of at least 30mm, and cannot project from the plan form by more than 30mm.

Also, see the illustrations on p129/286.

Basically, as long as the wheels don't stick out by more than a couple of inches you should be fine.

Feel free to print off and quote this lot! lol
