Leaking seal on front dif

I have a leaking oil seal on my front diff left hand side. There is play on the drive shaft which i believe is normal. How can i tell if the play is too excessive. If the carrier bearing needs changed can it be done with the diff in or will itneed removed.

We had the same issue on our 1996 KZN185. A change of outer seal sorted out the problem. I thought the driveshaft play at the diff end was a lot but the garage thought it was normal for the type.
