As far as I know, all Peugeot diesels are front wheel drive, and the zook is rear wheel drive, isn't it?
I would have thought a rear wheel drive Ford engine would be easier to fit, (Transit, Sierra, ect)

A corsa 1.5 tdi engine will fit without to much trouble or the pug 1.9tdi.if you wanna keep the sj gearbox you will need the bell housing that fit the original engine to weld onto the sj box

I think a diesel from a Sierra with its gearbox and use the Zook transfer box could work well . Lighter and smaller then the Pug and cheaper and more plentyful spares . Pug engines that will fit are from the older models and not as available as they used to be . The bell housing is expensive as a initial purchase.

Any Pug 1.9 engine will go into the SJ if you use the gearbox from an LDV Pilot van. Better still if you get the LDV Pilot engine and gearbox. 1st gear is super-low for crawlin' Other alternative gearboxes for the Pug are from the FSO pickup or FSO Polinez (rare as hens teeth nowadays).

VW 1.9 Diesel needs an adaptor plate which is about £500 from Rhino Rays (ouch).

The 1.7L Vauxhall/Isuzu engine is a popular mod. You would need the gearbox from a Vauxhall Carlton or Opel Manta (preferable because it is shorter than the Carlton box and saves moving the T/Case back).

Hope that helps. Mmmmmm Diesel engine - great for wading.

Escort is FWD , Sierra is RWD.

I get the feeling that Sumo wants a front wheel drive Zook!

It doesn't matter if the engine was transverse mounted in the doner vehicle, as long as you can get a RWD gearbox for it.

There is a guy that has built a brilliant lightweight trial buggy using a Citroen Saxo engine mounted where the passenger would normally sit, with the diff welded and driving Suzuki SJ410 axles with 24" of travel. It hasn't got a high top speed but at just under 500Kg it don't half get there quick!

This company have been fitting Peugeot Diesel engines into series Land Rovers for years, & series Land Rovers use rear wheel drive for normal usage.

Rick , I know a lad up here who fitted a Sierra diesel into an SJ . It seems like a good conversion . I can put you in touch with him if you like . He's a handy lad and very helpful.
