  • 2L II Engine Rattle

Have an old hilux with the 2.0 litre 2L II non turbo D engine.
Milage unknowable but proably high and being a Thai truck proably badly maintained...
Having said that. Its super reliable, surprisingly quick does not leak smoke or use oil.

It rattles.. more than normal diesel rattle. not a knock, its a metallic rattle. Its cosistent in that it rattles on tickover; goes away as revs rise through gears and returns at above 2k rpm once its at its normal highway speed, say 65kmh in 5th.
Rattle dissapers on deceleration. More rattle on load or when in its "usual' range, tickover or cruising.
Oil pressure is good, i have cracked each injector to see if any differece i.e. unload each cylinder, does not affect rattle. Screwdriver to ear does not help identify top or bottom end.

Any ideas, suggestions based on what is likely to cause? Big end shells? Value of truck does not warrant a proper rebuild, I just feel it's pain and would help it if I can...

    its a 2.4 litre.
the noise could be a loose pre cup, which is not an issue.

What brand and grade of oil do you use?

Thanks for that, had never even heard of a pre cup.. if they were at fault, wondering why would the rev range make such a difference, rattle at tickover, virtually none around 1k and then comes back at 2-2.5k? Would pre cup exhibit in that way, it sounds so much like end wear but I really appreciate real experience on these engines as I have none!

Nev, no idea on oil, have not changed it on the basis that it might undergo a shell change.. reccomendations? But as it only rattles at certain points I"d ruled out oil as surely it would rattle all the time?
