  • How to fit freewheeling hubs.

Really easy job that should take no longer than 30 mins per side.
These are the Items as sold by Roughtrax, (The same for 2.4 and 3.0 2nd gen)...
    http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=146&vid=1139

    1. Raise and support the side you want to tackle first and remove wheel.
    2. Prise off dust cap from the end of the driveshaft.
    3. Remove the centre bolt/washer from the driveshaft and the dome nuts/washers/cone washers (12mm socket)

    4. Remove the end plate and paper gasket, you'll probably need a hammer and cold chisel if it has never been off before.

    5. Take one of the hubs out of the box...

remove the two torx head screws and seperate the the two halves..

    6. Fit supplied paper gasket to hub...

..and then the F/W hub body and re-fit the washers and dome head nuts you removed earlier....(discard the cone washers as they're not needed)

    7. Re-fit the centre bolt/washer to the end of the driveshaft...

    8. Fit the F/W hub face and tighten all the torx head bolts...

    9. TEST.
With the F/W hub set at 2X4, the driveshaft should remain still when you turn the hub/brake disc.
Engage 4X4 on the hub face by turning it 1/4 turn and the driveshaft should now turn with the hub/brake disc.
    10. If all working, re-fit road wheel and do the other side.

Remember to lock the hubs before off-roading, especially in deep, wet mud!
It doesn't matter if you forget to unlock them when back on the road, but if you do you'll save a bit of fuel and C/V joint/boot wear.

    Hope that helps someone.

Manual hubs don't do anything automatically.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

No because apart from some very early models the Surfs do not have automatic hubs as many believe. They have ADD which is Auto Disconnecting Differential. It's the diff that engages (via a sliding collar on the drivers side shaft) and disengages, not hubs.

If you fit locking hubs, can you then do away with the ADD system?

You can do away with most of it anyway, no need for manual hubs.

Anyway, this has ben stickied, so we really shouldn't taint it.

                        hi-lux freewheeling hubs?

                        Hi.
would a set of freewheeling hubs from a hi-lux go straight on?
it looks like the same hub and axle end arrangement (as i remember).
i think i've still got a pair somewhere....
saves fuel, more beans, and looks good in the wheel centre too. all good

                        Sim.

                          Hi-lux hubs

just checked and the hi-lux half shafts were bigger, so the splined collar is too big for my surf.
might be able to change the bearing/collar as its a replaceable unit in the freewheeling hub housing. i'll have to go ask at toyota.

You need hubs off an IFS pickup, 97-on to fit a 2nd Gen Surf.

Just to let people know, the freewheeling hubs Roughtrax are currently selling (these) need the cone washers to be refitted.

Incidentally, after having the 3.0 manual for a week, I've just refilled it with fuel and fitted the freewheeling hubs. There's noticeably less resistance turning the front wheels after fitting them
The 'before' was 29mpg on my run to work. I'll post the after next week when I fill it up again.
