Thanks for all the input guys, was great help.
Glad it's sorted mate, after a settling in period mine is also running pretty sweet

That's good you guys have smooth running motors again.
It'll certainly do it some good having new plugs, leads and other ignition parts.
Have you worked out mpg yet Alex or not done enough miles yet?

Gonna do the mpg when I get back from camping although it'll be a 80% motorway calculation, proberly do a pure urban mpg 2 weeks from now

With any luck the MPG will have risen up to about 25 on M way and about 22 or 20 round town ? that's what I roughly get, one time I managed 28 MPG on a long M way haul just keeping a steady pace and no sudden acceleration, but only that once and the road was very clear.
On a different note did either of you see Guy Martin drive his Transit at over 170 mph in a time trial in Nevada desert on Sunday TV ? what a van.

That seems quite good mpg that does.
No haven't seen it yet-on holiday. Will try catchup with that when I get back.

OK so basically it hasn't changed a bit, I worked out that my motorway there and a load of town driving averaged 14mpg and my 75mile motorway home worked out at 20mpg, the urban driving in Sussex had a lot of hills involved and dips and long turns, I'll see how she is driving back at home in the nice flat Twickenham lol

3Lions-Is it still running good? Just watched Guy Martin - crazy van, but top build. And what won the 150 mph class - an Ultima GTR! V8 chevy engine in those.
Alex - I thought your truck had the diff gearing raised higher to bring down revs - mpg should be up from what is obtained on the standard diffs.
There seems like some other issue here.

Well I'm lost I'm not sure what other stuff could have such a damaging effect on the mpg, I always had the theory that the regearing means I lose low speed acceleration and have to push it harder round town but on the flip side 20 motorway mpg isn't exactly ground breaking, if I got 30 on motorway and 10 round town then you could see the effect the diffs have but I'm low on both urban and motorway

Ultimagtr21, yes mate it's still running great, touch wood. I got the new rotor and dizzy cap will try to fit it this week some time ,let you know if it sounds a bit crisper.
Yep the Guy Martin van was a beast , 350bhp standard ford 3.5 litre twin turbo State side Transit engine, sent to a tuners producing 790 bhp , If only they made factory vans like that !!. Yes mate Chev's make some great engines , the old vette engine from the 70's was a monster and the Chevelle 440ci was almost un drivable on any road with a corner, is that engine where you chose your handle from ?
Alex I'm still trying to work out why your truck gets such poor mpg compared to my old banger. I know you mentioned the gearing was higher and you stated a couple of numbers , I also know the higher the ratio the more the engine has to rev to get the speed, so if you have 5:1 ratio axle the engine will rev a lot more and use more juice than if you have a 3:1 ratio axle, so when the prev owner told you he had made the gearing higher did he mean he had lowered the ratio or made the ratio higher.
Sounds like I'm asking a ignorant question mate but it's easy to get confused about the ratio thing. I went off about v8 years ago and purchased a Jag IRS rear axle complete geared at 2.96:1 it's the XJS old style rear with a locking diff, was going to stick it in the Transit when I ever get round to it (dream land), so I went to see a guy called Pop Brown , a hot rod specialist who sold Jag read cross members, fabricated to fit the diff to any car you want. He explained to me that the gearing was higher as the ratio was lower ? this confused me a bit but when he told me the transit diff was about 3.5:1 it made sense that the Jag diff would end up making the engine rev lower to get the van to speed compared to the Tranny one that was higher ratio so geared lower for towing etc. I'm just saying perhaps you could check the actual ratio on yours again by contacting the guy who had it changed ? to clarify if it is geared low or high compared to standard.
Another thing I changed on mine was I tightened up the kick down cable to zero slack , after this the gear changes were fewer and the engine ran longer in each gear, don't ask why , I saw a how to on one of the lextreme sites? and thought it sounded good, I'm not saying this will help you but it's another option, don't quote me on that though.
Have you got rid of the cats? they suck fuel and hp from any engine, and lets be honest they do nothing to stop the pollution in reality, it's all a scam.

Yes mate my diffs are 3.42 most common diff on the surfs are 4.10 followed by 4.56
I have watched a very informative video on youtube that explains diffs like 3.42s hurt acceleration and mpg looks like I'm back to square one and I'm gonna have to get them regeared

3 Lions - That's good news - I started off with new dizzy caps, rotor arms, leads, plugs, water pump and belts when Vince did the conversion.
Yes that is where I had my username is from - Ultimagtr is the company/car itself. They are a kit car, but the kit is new. You can buy it assembled or build your own. See here http://ultimasports.co.uk/Content.aspx?f=gtrintro.
I saw them at Donnington kit car show many years ago.
The normally aspirated V8 they fit is available from 300 to 1000bhp.
Their demonstrator that they use for their records is 720bhp I think. Holds the world record for zero to 100mph and back to zero in 9.4secs!
Alex - Can't think of anything else that could be causing it - if it's running right, shifting gears correctly ( maybe see about getting the mixture checked with exhaust gas analyser ) then it must have something to do with the gearing.

                            great kit car mate.
Yea I started to take the dizzy off but getting to the bolt holding the cover on right under the power steering pump is very hard , so I left it for now and will try again , as I needed the truck later that day. Will let you know what it's like.
Yes Alex I must agree if it's not a fault with the engine or injection then the only things it could be is the gearing except for the exhaust dia, that I think can have an effect on MPG, when folks fit large dia exhaust on cars , like the hatch backs kids get that sound like a bag of spanners and loose HP too.
I have no CATs on mine it's a 90 import so it's pre that law and I can't see why mine is getting 20+ even round town, while yours is drinking it like gazza.? it's a bit of a mystery , try getting a readout on each bank of cylinders from a garage who has one of those testers they stuff up the exhaust tip.
just noticed Ultimagtr21 already suggested that
