  • 1992 LN 130 Power Loss

    Hi all,

Wondering if anyone could shed some light on my power loss issue. My Hilux will only go about 40mph tops, though it can rev up way beyond 3000 no worries.

Many years ago I had this problem and the mechanic told me they were struggling to time it up properly, then when they finally managed it the power came back and everything was normal again.

Now, the latest mechanic is saying that the lack of power is due to the fact that it is leaking diesel from its fuel pump.

Can a leaking fuel pump stop the power getting to the wheels? Or is this mechanic trying to blame the fact that he cant time it up properly on a leaking fuel pump?

Any advice would be much appreciated, this has been winding me up for ages.

    I thought 40 mph was a respectable speed for a 2.4 surf...

    Sorry, just being silly...

Yes for sure, a problem in the fuel delivery can cause loss of power, let him investigate and sort the leak out first. Those fuel pumps can be reconditioned I think, new seals etc.
    Good luck

tashtego - thanks for the confirmation! I'm actually selling it as I've had to buy a van and cant afford to finish fixing my hilux so investigating the fuel pump will have to be the job of the buyer.

bryanisaoldgit - Trans fluid? Whats that?

Hey that could be it! It revs fine but wont go past 40mph, so it must not be able to reach the higher gears...How costly can it be to top up the transmission oil do you think? And is it something a non-mechanic like myself can do maybe?

couple lts around 10 15 guids
it goes in thru the dipstick hole
                  NOT THE ENGINE OIL FILLER
its down on the side of the motor
and its held in by a flip catch

Oh. Thats wierd. I thought the dipstick measured the oil level in the engine? if thats where the transmission oil goes, wouldnt that mean the dipstick measures the transmission oil level instead?
