  • missfire on LEXURF III

Ok so wondered is anyone knows the cause, although perhaps it's more obvious than I can see.
Lexurf III has been running great, passed another MOT earlier this year no problem, I went up to local garage other day (I normally buy my fuel at Tesco) as I was a bit low on petrol. Went in to pay and was surprised at the price, it was dirt cheap, why's that I said, they told me they were having the tanks dug up and replaced..Got in the truck drove about 1/2 a mile to my house ,was running fine, parked up, and went in home for the night.
Next day I went down to start the truck and it's running like a bag of spanners, missing , wont tick over and will only rev to 2 grand on the counter. Initialy i'm thinking is it the MAF , long time back had one go on me so when I replaced it as they were getting rare for the old LS400 (engines's a 94, Surf is a 90), I got 2 ,both had been tested, that was over 4 years back. Today I stuck the other MAF on and it's no different, so now I'm thinking is it crap or water in the petrol I pumped in the day before ? It does seem strange that it happened the next day with no one messing or using the truck .
I have tried the diagnostic thing but if anyone can actually count the blink's on the light that flashes on the dash and tell the difference between flashing then well done , I found it very hard.
Any ideas before it has to go to see a mechanics diag machine ? thanks.

    just to add,
engine management light flashed I think ?
    2 then 9 ,
    2 and then 5,
    3 and 7 ?
it's then I started to think , what a stupid idea this system is or am I not concentrating enough,

Well 2 and 9 (29) is Sub-oxygen sensor signal (on right bank)

      2 and 5 (25) is Air-fuel ratio lean malfunction

Those 2 seem to go hand in hand in my opinion

As for 37 there isn't one, closest is 35 which is HAC sensor signal or high altitude compensation sensor, if your engine thinks it's at 10k feet it might be trying to run a different mix which might be affecting the other 2 codes

      That's my 2 pence I'm not a mechanic

        thanks for that Alex,
yep I not sure I was reading those flashes right , my eyesight is ok but the dash is all scratched to hell and it's hard to recognise the flashing ,
Anyway yesterday I flushed out the tank thinking it was CO-OP's crappy petrol and still the same , today , in fact 10 mins ago I tried disconnecting the MAF and it ran just the same ?
then I thought it seems as though it's only running on 4 cylinders, so I disconnected the right hand coil HT lead (right hand looking at the engine from front) and it ran just the same so then I'm thinking it should at least have missed a bit more if it's a fuel problem , so I then re connected the right hand coil and disconnected the one on the top of the engine and it refused to start all together, so I am about to try to source a coil or perhaps a pair to fit on as that last test I think shows it's the right hand coil knackered.
Will try to get one and let you know.

I get about 25 mpg on lets say the motorway or a clear carriageway but that's only if they are clear and running free, when I plod about town and it's stop start it drops top about 20 -22 mpg, so far mine has not dropped below 20 mpg and I think that's quite good for a 4L V8 , plus I have 33's on my rims so I guess that makes the A road trips a bit more economic but at the same time cuts down the town mpg due to having to turn the bigger tyres from stop to go all the time.
I haven't got any Cat's on mine , both banks or 4 run separate back to their own muffler (if you can call it that) , they are Spintech from USA, loud as f**k, and I mean really loud , I keep planning to make it a bit quitter but never seem to get round to it. I had planned on fitting two cherry bomb resonators before the Spintech's because when I stand on it and then have to decelerate quick I get a few bangs and pops. I had thought at one time of getting the truck lowered and fitting some 15 dia rims with low porf tyres and having it a bit more like one of those L.A lowriders but it never happened and lowering the thing is like building another car from scratch. My 4 WD hasn't worked since I had it but I don't go green lane trucking so don't bother me , only time I would like it is when I drop my boat in the water at a slipway , but so far the good tread on the AT's has gripped good enough on just the back wheels, my 4 WD might click in now and then when I try but I'm sure one wheel is def not engaging. Some years back ,Vince (guy who's not on the forum any more) said it was electrical fault but to take it back to him would have been more than taking it
              to local garage.
So what are you getting to the gallon more or less than me ? and did you do your engine swap yourself or did one of the guys on this forum do it ?
There might be a lot of info we can exchange Alex.

Mine is lexurf V (I think lol) I got it from Growler in January who got it from another forum user who had Vince do the swap, I get considerably less mpg I'm running at around the 10 mark hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahah
Not too sure why at the moment my best guess is that my diffs have been regeared to bring the revs down on the motorway and my theory is that I have to push it harder around town cos of that, it is slow as #### in my opinion till you get to around 40mph then it starts taking off

wow Alex, that is p155 poor mpg mate, I can not imagine that sort of mpg , in fact if mine was like that I would have to sell it.
When you mean the gearing on the diff's do you think it's geared lower to go off roading as in so the engine revs are high but the wheels turn slower, like LOW on the trans box does. Because I would think that it should be mashing along like mad on the open road otherwise, especially if you have taller tyres on it , that means the engine is working less and your covering more miles .
I haven't had any diff work done , it's just standard, and I have had 130 mph out of the thing (that's on the clock) admittedly the thing was a bit out of control at that sort of speed but engine still wasn't up to full on revs, I bottled it not the engine.
You have got rid of the cats haven't you or perhaps yours is within the age it has to have them? mines a 1990 LN130 model so I don't need the cats , also have you got a good open air filter on the thing, I got one of those GREEN high performance ones used for engines up to 600hp the Yank car fans use them on their street drag cars, cost me 70 squid but is still in good cond after 5 years. It's makes a lot of difference to the mpg and performance of the LS engine.
Do you go 4 wheeling then Alex ? I'm not into that as I said and if you only go off road about once or twice a year I would change the diff's back to normal road spec if I was you mate , so that you can get some half decent mpg. The LS is designed for 15 inch low prof wheels and tyres so in effect large dia should give you better mpg but slower acceleration while at the same time the gearbox is auto so should compensate a bit.
Lexurf V, I think I remember seeing that one before the engine swap parked at Vince's place when I picked mine up, nice looking truck. Mine now is showing it's age a bit , the kin passengers side window wont wind down , ok in winter but not great mid summer, there's a couple of other small niggly things that have started to go wrong, central locking packed up, back window will wind down but has to be left not totally closed, chances are in about a years time or 2 I will have to say bye bye to the Hilux part of the truck, keep the engine (if it's running ok) and try sticking it in or pay some one to fit it into an old MK2 Ford Transit I have that has no electronic crap on it and all I will need is the ECU from the Lexurf, no electric, windows ,mirrors , airbags ,central locking ,etc etc just basic good old style hand operated parts, I mean I like driving the Lexurf but if I had my time again I would have never got a Surf in the first place and should have spent my £'s on a newer Transit lol.

by the way Alex I just had a look on the forum for Lexurf V and you posted a question about "where was the diagnostic's box" and Growler sent a picture reply ? is that your truck mate, the picture Growler sent ?
Seems like you have a lot of air intake tubing and the MAF is a long way form the engine with a big HD air filter, perhaps that's causing some of the poor mpg, I could well be wrong but it's a thought.

Yes that's my truck, yea it has a full snorkel, the diffs have been regeared to 3.42 which is taller than any standard surf, think the tallest they do is 4.10, the original owners post when he regeared it stated that the new diffs means when at 70mph the engine revs sit at 2200 rather than 3200, clearly motorway mpg was his concern but I don't do motorway driving so would much rather raise hell around town, if the truck is in 3rd and u want to overtake it basically can't move faster and change down to 2nd is the only option
I am looking at getting her regeared to 4.88s because she already has front and rear lsd's, karma supra done it recently and he's happy with them
Unfortunately my home life has changed dramatically in the last few weeks and selling the truck may very well be a necessity, but we'll see how it goes, thankfully the miles I cover per month means I can survive on £150 petrol, which ain't the end of the world but if she did 20mpg that could be £100

Ok I see what you mean now, first I thought that it was using more juice due to it being UNDER geared at the diff's meaning it would be revving high to keep up the speed, but by the sounds of it though that ratio is still quite high (low geared) to me.
Yep with regards the cats I wondered if Vince had left them on , I guess if yours was originally a diesel then it wouldn't have them anyway but they did make a 3L v6 petrol Surf didn't they?
Mine was 2.4 diesel that was about as useful as a chocky teapot, wouldn't pull your hat off in a storm and when you wanted to overtake you had to book it in advance. Like I said I love the engine but have come to realise the Surf is an ok vehicle but in effect it's a estate car that cost a shed load to run and getting stuff inside the thing to transport anything is ridiculous. So when mine ends it's time and the body or chassis fails it's MOT "one day", I will take the engine out and try to get it stuck in to my old MK2 tranny.

i do love the engines, theres a guy on instagram down south with the 1uz in a mk3 shogun, very clean swap and hes in the process of turboing it (lucky git) id like to see that shift in the mud, defo think im gonna go down the reargearing of the diffs route

yep Alex I think you will get a lot more MPG if you do, 10 is about the same as running a Chevelle 440 (my fave US muscle car) but with the Chev you are getting close to 500 hp for your 10 mpg.
Mine still isn't fixed, put new coil on as I was sure it was that and it's exactly the same , so now I'm thinking is it the distributor on the right hand side (looking at engine from front), it's now p155ing me off as I have no way of testing anything so it's more a case of disconnect and see if it makes it worse .
Oh for the days of carb's and contact points, ha ha ha .
