  • Spare wheel carrier mod.

For a while, now, I've fancied re locating the spare wheel to sit further up,out of harms way and at an angle in line with the back window. After some cutting, and mocking things up, I popped round to a mate who did the welding, strengthening and some re profiling. there's plenty room and clearance, now, even for when I finally get a visit from the 35's fairy. Hope the pics help to explain.

Nicely done Mick - I remember You posting a pic off a Spanish site ages back that I saved for inspiration but I haven't got round to having a go myself yet.

Hey Rob. Don't remember what that was, remind me. The Spanish site is really interesting, with some really innovative modifications, many of which we don't seem to see elsewhere. If you click "Google Translate" some of the text is hilarious!

You're right Bri. Fat Mouse do some real quality stuff. If you have a look on the Spanish 4Runner site, there are some extremely long and detailed build threads showing their work.

                  Yeh...looks like quality work.

But I can't get away with that style. The thin edges to the wheel arches.

See it a lot. I presume there's a good reason for it?

I take it You're referring to the difference between "wide body" and "standard", Sy. The original 2nd gen Surf/4Runner didn't have bolt on arches. I believe that they were introduced in 91. Surfs were still produced in narrow body format for several years later. I think all US spec 2nd gen 4Runners are "standard". European "wide body" 4Runners were the designated as the "VX" model. Several aftermarket suppliers have produced wheel arch kits to fit to the "standard" body models. Many people have just removed the "wide body" arches from a breaker, and retro fitted them to their "standard" model. Hope this helps.

No, sorry...I meant the way those style of winch bumpers go from chunky to being thin on the edges.

Seems to be a common design so I was thinking there might be a practical reason.

Would rather have one that was straight, for my personal tastes.

Rough pic to show what I'm jibbering on about :

Sorry, mate. I misunderstood what you meant. Open front corners are better off road, for climbing out of ditches at angles, etc. I did similar with my front valance. Just chopped it back a bit. It's the poor mans version. .

That's not too bad at all. There's more depth at the sides but still looks like it does the job.

                          I like that

I think the flat/thicker bumpers look too big on the front, the cut away ones look 'proper' but I suppose it's down to taste and practicality.
